This 15-second style tip will transform any outfit and take it to noteworthy recognition. We all know those outfits when we see them. The woman who is able to mix Zara with Chanel and make it look effortlessly put together. It may seem like she left the womb able to layer and mix and match with nary a misstep, but there’s one easy rule that most of these women swear by: the third-piece rule. Here’s how it works.
Every great ensemble has three elements. Assuming that the basic necessities like your pants and your top qualify as the first two elements, then the the third element is the one that will send your look into the style stratosphere.
For example, if you’re wearing a white blouse and jeans top it off with a statement blazer. Other third element game changers are handbags, shoes, belts, necklaces and earrings. Once you’ve mastered the third element rule, you can experiment with pairings like shoes and handbag, necklaces and bracelets. You get the idea. Now you can rest assured that your outfit just got a lot more stylish with minimal effort.
The outfit above is a perfect example of this rule. I typically wear a white top and blue jeans most days. So, the third element I chose was a statement shoe. The pink Balenciaga knife mule is the perfect feminine counterpoint to the white blouse and ripped boyfriend jeans. If you wanted to play around with the third rule idea you could add a statement bag like I did below.
